Painting a metal tray with Chalk Paint

With many paints painting metal can be tricky, but not with Chalk Paint. This project shows just how easy it is.

Metal can be a difficult surface to paint on, but not with Chalk Paint. If the surface is in good condition i.e. no rust you can paint straight on with your Annie Sloan Chalk Paint colour.

A friend of Sherry’s was throwing away these unassuming metal trays, and Sherry decided to take them and try out a paint and stencil effect.

Having chosen Old Ochre Chalk Paint as the base colour, Sherry painted one thick coat straight onto the surface, painting the underside first and then turning upright to paint the top.

Once the base coat had dried, Sherry choose a Cafe de Paris stencil. She used Graphite Chalk Paint for the stencilled area dabbing a fairly dry brush though the stencil.

Once the stencilled area was dry, Sherry sanded it lightly to bring some of the Old Ochre colour though, and giving a slightly distressed look. She then applied Annie Sloan Soft Wax over the the stencilled area, which she says makes it look more subtle.

The finished tray is quite a transformation, don’t you agree?
